Podcast Interviews from CNI Membership Meeting

Interviews conducted during the Spring 2011 CNI Membership Meeting have been published by EDUCAUSE:

The podcasts include a conversation with plenary speaker Todd Presner, founder and director of HyperCities (a GIS research and education platform built on the Google Maps and Google Earth APIs), as well as an interview with UCSD University Librarian Brian Schottlaender on collaboration and the future of university libraries. EDUCAUSE producer Gerry Bayne spent time with a few other presenters and attendees at CNI’s spring meeting, including:

• Brian Owen (Simon Frasier Univ.), discussing the Public Knowledge Project
• Thomas Hickerson and Shawna Sadler on the Univ. of Calgary’s Taylor Family Digital Library, a converged library, archive, art and publishing facility
• Sayeed Choudhury (Johns Hopkins Univ.) with a Data Conservancy Update
• Robert Seal (Loyola Univ.) reflects on three years of an information commons Library-ITS partnership

These recordings are designed to function as an extension of the meeting, complementing the standard program, and providing an opportunity for the broader CNI community to hear from some of our key presenters and attendees.

Hold the Dates: EDUCAUSE-ACTI-CCI / CASC Joint Workshop on Data Lifecycle Mgt

I’ve been serving on the planning committee for a joint EDUCAUSE-CASC workshop on Data Lifecycle Management that will be funded by NSF; this funding is now in place, and the dates are set for July 18-20, 2011 in Princeton. See the announcement below.

We received NSF funding today for our joint workshop with CASC on Data Lifecycle Management.  The workshop will be held July 18 – 20, 2011 in Princeton, NJ.  We will send out complete information soliciting position papers and applications to attend the workshop (which will be limited to 75 attendees) later this week.  The steering committee is comprised of Curt Hillegas, Princeton University – Chair; Raj Bose, Columbia University; Cliff Lynch, CNI; Oren Sreebny, University of Chicago; and Kerstin Lehnert, Columbia University.

Institutional Repositories – EDUCAUSE Preconference

Susan Gibbons and Michael Bell will describe strategies they are using at University of Rochester to recruit content for their institutional repository as well as discuss broad trends. Campus open access mandates, the potential for the Federal Research Public Access Act or similar legislation to require public access to federally funded articles and data sets, and a growing acceptance of download statistics as a measure of impact of one’s research have caused a resurgence in the interest and use of institutional repositories (IRs). This workshop will explain how IRs naturally align (or misalign) with the goals and work practices of faculty, researchers, and students and review successful strategies for content recruitment. Moreover, the workshop will be framed by the rapidly shifting higher education and open access landscapes, which may propel IRs in unanticipated ways.

Announcement of ELI Evidence of Impact

I’m passing along an announcement from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative; it describes a new initiative on a topic that will interest many in the CNI community. Information technologists, instructional technologists, and librarians will increasingly be asked to demonstrate the value of their programs and services in this challenging economic climate. This EDUCAUSE initiative, focusing on the impact of innovations in teaching and learning, will provide many vehicles for exploring how to conceptualize and generate useful evidence.

On August 3, the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) launched a new program to explore ways of gathering and collecting evidence of the impact of our innovations and current practices. Called “Seeking Evidence of Impact,” this program will bring the teaching and learning community into a collective discussion and consist of a variety of events, meetings, workshops, and publications over the next 18 months—all united around the theme of “seeking evidence of impact.” More information is available at the program’s website: <http://tinyurl.com/ELIevidence>

One of the inspirations for this program came from conversations we had with CIOs at last year’s EDUCAUSE conference. Faced with difficult budgeting and resource decisions, we found that CIOs were asking if there was data upon which to base such decisions with respect to teaching and learning support. These considerations echoed comments from other communities, all of which indicated an increasing importance on encouraging evidence-based practices in support of our students and their instructors.

This new ELI program is first and foremost an exploration of this theme. While we cannot predict “where” this program will be 18 months from now, we can say that no style, method, or school of gathering evidence will be excluded or privileged. We look forward to engaging with the community on a topic of keen importance to us all.

CNI at EDUCAUSE 2009 in Denver
